In a USGBC Industry feature, Chris Schaffner shares how he approaches JEDI goals as a small business owner at the helm of The Green Engineer, and the challenges faced in combatting systemic racism and social inequity in the context of practicing sustainable design.

"In a way, the firm itself is a design project, and its mission and organization reflect a vision for how the world ought to be. To that end, we’ve embraced workplace democracy and transparency, moved to an employee ownership model, become a B Corp, and published our JUST label.

Becoming anti-racist and embracing the JEDI (justice, equity, diversity and inclusion) challenge, though, was something new and different for us, as well as unfamiliar territory for me personally."
