"I’ve been thinking a lot about net zero energy buildings lately. They’re all the rage. Everyone is about to build one. Or their building is “net zero ready”. Or something like that. A lot of hot air, but not many actually getting built. We’ve even got awards and certifications for net zero buildings. And controversy – can a building be net zero if they sold the SRECs? (I don’t think so but others say yes) – is wood really a carbon neutral fuel?
But as we get focused on net zero, I think we need to step back and think about whether a net zero building is the right goal.

Once again, The Green Engineer sponsored and participated in Architecture for Humanity, Boston’s annual 5k race fundraiser which, this year dubbed “Run Like You Give a Damn”, raised funds to help build the new Plateau Central Vocational School in Haiti.

A client asks: “If my building is meeting energy code, will it also be able to get the Energy Star label?”
This question is not as simple to answer as it should be. There are multiple competing metrics for comparison of building energy consumption.
After successfully completing the evaluation period for both LEED BD+C and LEED ID+C projects, The Green Engineer has been officially enlisted to the Proven Provider program by the Green Building Certification Institute (GBCI).
Voting is currently open until Sept. 20th for the 2014 People's Choice Award hosted by the AIA New England chapter. The Green Engineer is proud to be included on a total of six of the nominated projects listed currently on the AIA NE's voting website. Employees of TGE along with their family and friends participated in a day-long walking tour in the city of Boston, visiting a variety of projects that TGE is working on or has completed work in. The crew was benefitted with a low-humidity, overcast day that proved to be perfect weather for a day-long excursion.
